Go on a journey to the foot of Austria’s highest mountain on what is probably Europe’s most famous Alpine road – the Großglockner High Alpine Road – 48 kilometres of sheer driving pleasure combined with spectacular views and the stunning flora and fauna of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Take a break at the toll booth where you can visit the Ferleiten Animal Park and marvel at more than 200 local animal species.

Gorges and caves have been fascinating mankind for centuries and many of the most attractive and interesting gorges of the Salzburg Region are within quick reach. It is, for example, well worth visiting the Liechtensteinklamm (66 km), the Kitzlochklamm (43 km) or the “Saalachtal Natural Wonders” (ca. 23 km) with the Seisenberg and Vorderkaserklamm and they are all very exciting for children!

The Kitzsteinhorn is a popular destination for both sports and nature lovers in summer as well as winter. Whilst skiers and snowboarders can enjoy the eternal ice of this glacier skiing region for almost 10 months of the year, a ride in the Gipfelwelt 3000 panoramic peak station impresses visitors in the summer. This is the highest viewing platform accessible for everyone in the Salzburger region and offers stunning views of the Großglockner mountain.

With a height of 380 metres, the Krimml Waterfalls are the highest in Europe. This impressive natural landmark in Austria has been named a world heritage site and is one of the main attractions in the Salzburg Region. There is a well-developed path along the waterfall with many viewing points and recesses which take you right up to the waterfall where you will be able to enjoy many memorable views.

All visits here should include an excursion to the famous festival city of Salzburg which offers many architectural as well as cultural highlights and is also the birthplace of Mozart. Famous attractions include the Salzburg Cathedral, the Mirabell Palace, the Horse Well and the Hohensalzburg Castle whilst the Getreidegasse offers many great shopping opportunities in the Old Town as well as numerous culinary delights.

The “World of Ice Giants” in Werfen is the biggest ice cave in the world which has developed over thousands of years and fascinates not only with its amazing ice sculptures. The gigantic cave system extends across more than 42 kilometres, the first section is open to visitors. As temperatures are usually below zero even in the summer, it is recommended that you bring sturdy shoes and warm clothing with you.

A visit to the Leogang Show Mine is very interesting and also a great thing to do in poor weather. Guided tours and exciting treasure hunts for children are offered. The Mining and Gothic Museum in the district of Hütten, meanwhile, impressively presents Medieval exhibits which offer insights into the everyday lives and beliefs of the miners. Changing special exhibitions!
